Useful Grooming Terms
Shave down- This is probably the most misunderstood term in grooming. Shavedown just means that you want the same body length all over the dog, shorter than what it is now. I can leave as little as 1/16th of an inch, or well over 1 inch.
Neaten- Neatening is when I scissor off hair that if left, can make the dog look unkempt. Neatening is normally done on the feet up to the hocks and between the foot pads, and a slight trim of the tail. For breeds that need a neaten, it is included in the bath price.
Extended Neaten- An extended neaten is just a more advanced version of the neaten. In addition to the basic neaten, I will trim the sanitary area and all the feathering on the dog. This is an extra charge.
Feathering- Feathers are long hairs that hang from the coat on the legs, chest, and the rear area. Feathers are not on every dog. They are commonly found on Golden Retrievers, Collies, and other long haired breeds.
Pants- Pants are the thick growth of hair between the dog’s hind legs. The hair can get matted very easily and is very adept at catching what should remain in the yard after you let your dog out to do his business. Thankfully, this area is very easy to brush out and trim.
Anal Glands- CPP expresses the anal glands on every dog that gets a bath or clip. Anal glands are two sacks inside your dog that are supposed to be emptied each time your dog has a bowel movement. I say supposed to because it doesn’t always work this way for various reasons. There are easy ways to tell if your dog needs their anal glands done: if your dog scoots his rear on the floor, if he is constantly licking around his rear, and then there is the strange and foul odor. Do not ignore these signs. It will not turn out well.
